So also My heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

Matthew 18:35

Grace, mercy, and peace will be with you, who forgive your debtors, as God has forgiven you.

“So My Heavenly Father also will do to you.”

What a fearful statement this is!!! Because it speaks of judgment.

James 2:13 says, “For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.”

God also tells us that He desires mercy rather than sacrifice.

What does this mean?

It means that we must not offer mere lip service in worship while our hearts are filled with hatred toward others within the church.

It makes me deeply reflect on what it truly means to forgive someone from the very center of my heart.

In the Lord’s Prayer that Jesus gave us, we pray:

“And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.”

For seventy years, from the time I was in my mother’s womb, I have prayed the Lord’s Prayer, yet I could not understand this particular verse.

I had never learned its precise meaning, and the interpretations offered by theologians never truly touched my heart.

If I interpret it literally, it sounds as though I am saying, “I have forgiven those who have sinned against me, so please forgive my sins as well.”

But that is not the truth!

To be honest, I had not forgiven those who had treated me badly or hurt my feelings, nor had I always treated them with love.

I had become angry, argued with them, and sometimes wanted to avoid them altogether.

I had acted contrary to the Lord’s teaching. 🥺

So how could I present my forgiveness as a condition before God, as though I had already forgiven others?

The Lord knew my deep struggle and earnest longing to understand what forgiveness truly meant. He helped me understand it through this confession:

“Lord, just as You have forgiven those who have sinned against me, please forgive my sins in the same way!”

Through this understanding, my question was finally resolved.

✝️🎁

Wouldn’t someone who has deeply experienced God’s mercy be able to forgive others as well?

Wouldn’t someone who has deeply recognized their own sins and repented be able to forgive others, too?

Wouldn’t a humble person be able to forgive others?

Wouldn’t someone who realizes that they, too, have hurt others countless times—and continue to do so—be able to forgive those who have hurt them?

I understand these truths in my mind, yet I see my own weakness when it comes to putting them into practice through my words and actions, from the very center of my heart.

Looking at myself in this light, I confess to the Lord that I am not even worthy to claim the right to judge whether I can forgive others.

Grace, mercy, and peace be with you, as you forgive your debtors, just as God has forgiven you.
