Genesis 38:16 / 10-23-26
Then he turned to her by the way, and said, “Please let me come in to you”; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. So she said, “What will you give me, that you may come in to me?”
Genesis 38:16
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Here is the context: according to ancient Israelite tradition, after two of Judah’s three sons had died, the third son was supposed to take Tamar (his sister-in-law) as his wife and become a responsible husband for her.
However, Judah falsely refused to give his third son to Tamar, so Tamar disguised herself as a prostitute and seduced him. With his own wife having passed away, Judah sought to have relations with the prostitute, and Tamar asked him, "What will you give me if I lie with you?"
Anticipating Judah's deception, Tamar sought a pledge rather than money. Later, Tamar became pregnant and gave birth to Perez.
Judah regarded his daughter-in-law's actions as immorality and intended to punish her, but through the pledge, she revealed to the world that Judah was the father of the child.
Why did the Bible suddenly insert this incident between Judah and his daughter-in-law Tamar in Genesis 38—right between Chapter 37, where Joseph is sold to Potiphar in Egypt by his brothers, and Chapter 39?
In Chapter 37, Judah joined forces with his brothers to deceive their father Jacob by smearing blood on Joseph's tunic as evidence that he had died. Yet in Chapter 38, we see Judah himself being deceived through the pledge he gave to Tamar.
Seeing how unrighteous and immoral Judah was—rather than righteous Joseph—one cannot help but ponder God's will in continuing the redemptive history that leads to Jesus.
The deceiver gets deceived and pays the price for unrighteousness, yet God’s providence does not end there. I realize the truth that He bestows the salvation of grace.
While Satan conceals sin and deceptively justifies it, God's grace reveals human sinfulness and opens the path to repentance and transformation, making us realize the Lord's endless love and mercy.
My dear friend, what are your thoughts on this?
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with you from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
